SECONDARY TECHNICAL SCHOOL ,OGBOR HILL
ABA MY ALMAR MATER:
Founding and Early Background:
Secondary
Technical School ,Ogbor Hill Aba was founded in 1977 by Chief Harris
Obodoukwu,a visionary educationist and philanthropist from Delta State
in Nigeria. The school was established as a privately owned technical
school during Eastern Nigeria,then the era of the old Imo State, before
the creation of Abia State in 1991.
It's mission was to provide
young Nigerians with quality education that would combine Academic
excellence and technical skills development in line with the vision of
Eastern Nigeria.
The pioneer Principal was Sir S.U.Nwakanma,who was
instrumental in setting high academic and moral standards. Under his
administration,the school quickly gained recognition for its disciplined
learning environment and practical training in the fields such as
woodwork, technical drawings,and basic electrical installation.
LEADERSHIP AND EARLY ACHIEVEMENT:
From
inception,the school attracted both students and staff who were
passionate about science, technical and Vocational Education.The first
Senior Prefect (boys) was Anwar Ibiam while the Senior Prefect ( girls)
was Gladys Nwachukwu. The school began with an initial enrollment of
150 students, drawn from various parts of the city and surrounding
communities.
GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT:
Through the late
1970s and 1980s , the school grew steadily in population and reputation.
It became widely recognized for its commitment to technical education,
discipline and academic excellence Many of its alumni went on to excel
in Engineering, Commerce, Medical Sciences, Judiciary, Administrative
and creative industries.
One of its most Distinguished alumnus is
Barr Anayo Modestus Onyekwere alias Kanayo O. Kanayo, the Veteran
Nigerian Actor and Lawyer,who has consistently acknowledged the school's
impact on his moral and intellectual development.
GOVERNMENT TAKEOVER AND EVOLUTION:
The
1977 transition marked a broader policy shift across Nigeria,as the
government took over the Private and mission schools to ensure uniform
educational standards. During this era, Secondary Technical School
,Ogbor Hill,Aba, became part of the state managed school system. In
2012,under the leadership of Governor Theodore Orji,the Abia State
Government, announced a major educational reform. The handover of 19
mission and private schools to their original owners.
CONCLUSION:
From
it's humble beginning as Harris Commer School in the early 1960s to its
transformation into Secondary Technical School, Ogbor ,Hill Aba . And
1977 , and eventual restoration to private ownership in 2012. The
school's journey had witnessed recently, the selling of part of the land
to people which is currently in dire need of total restoration.
